Lesson #2 Measuring Weather

Unit: Weather                                                                                  Lesson: Measuring Weather

Grade: 4th grade                                                                             Subject: Earth and Space Science Lesson number within unit: 2                                                       Total Time Expected: 50 mins

Materials: Mason jars, plastic wrap, scissors, tape, straws, index cards, rubber bands, clear ruler, plastic funnel, plastic cups of different colors, cardboard, pens and pencils, stapler, pushpins

 

Technology: Computer, PowerPoint

Procedures: This is a makerspace activity. For this activity we will be using different materials to try and create a measuring instrument for weather. On the smart board it will say as the goal, “Make something to measure weather”. There will also be different weather instruments posted on the board for them to see.

  1. Students can research on computers about different weather instruments if they would like to. They may also try to make one off prior knowledge.

  2. They will set it all up in the classroom and use the whole space.

  3. Students will have access to all materials and have the whole class to try and make a tool that will measure weather.

    1. The tool must measure something in weather

    2. The student must also write how their tool works on an index card and hand it in

  4. Students will hand in their project at the end of class. The teacher will grade them and hang up all the finished projects or put them around the room

  5. Students should learn how different tools work and how they help us measure weather

Formative Assessment:

  • Making sure students making their instruments and not off task. Also making sure they know what there instrument is going to be used for.

 

Summative Assessment:

  • There will be a summative assessment at the end of the Unit
