Lesson 4: Natural Disasters

Materials: Activity sheet, virtual reality goggles(9), device to run VR goggles, pencil, QR code on sheets of paper (9), computer and projector

Technology: Virtual Reality, cell phone/ipad, computer, projector

Procedures: For this activity we will be using virtual/augmented reality to explore different natural disasters.

  1. To start the class and get their attention, we will watch an overview of all kinds of natural disasters that can happen in the world. I will then explain that they will be assigned to one natural disaster to be an expert on. There are 9 different natural disasters we will be going over.

  2. I will assign groups of 9 groups to different stations. At the stations you will bring your activity sheet and your pencil.

  3. In your groups you will scan the QR code with your virtual reality device.

  4. One by one you will put on the goggles and watch the video on your natural disaster

  5. When you finished the video, you will take what you watched and you will fill out your activity sheet. It will ask about the how the natural disaster is formed, what people should do in the event of the natural disaster and so on.

  6. When each group is done we will come back together and each group will present their findings to the class.

 

Natural Disaster Groups:

  1. Example: Tornado

  2. Hurricanes

  3. Earthquakes

  4. Tsunamis

  5. Landslides

  6. Volcano

  7. Blizzards

  8. Floods

  9. Wildfires

 

Formative Assessment:

  • Walking around the room while students are working in their stations and asking questions about their natural disaster and if they have any questions back. If they do not understand something, I will help explain it to them.

Summative Assessment:

  • There will be a summative assessment at the end of the Unit
